Being able to warm up the cabin before heading out on a January morning, or cool it down before hitting the road in summer, is especially handy in Canada. On many compatible Volkswagen models, remote start can be activated right from the key fob or through the myVW app, depending on how the vehicle is equipped.

Volkswagen's connected ecosystem has also evolved. The service formerly known as Car-Net is now called myVW+, and it's accessible through the myVW app. Here's how Volkswagen remote start works, which vehicles may be eligible, and what other features are now available to owners.

How Does Volkswagen Remote Start Work?

Depending on the vehicle, Volkswagen remote start can work with the key fob, the myVW app, or both.

Remote start lets you start the engine without being inside the vehicle. If your Volkswagen is equipped with this feature, you can prepare the cabin before you leave and give the heating or air conditioning a head start.

How you use it, however, depends on the model, model year, trim and equipment. A compatible Volkswagen may offer remote start through the key fob, the myVW app, or both.

Using Your Volkswagen Key Fob

On vehicles equipped with key fob remote start, the command works within its operating range. The exact procedure can vary from one model to another, so your owner's manual remains the go-to reference for the correct sequence and any conditions that need to be met.

Using the myVW App

On eligible vehicles, the myVW app gives you remote access to certain commands right from your smartphone. Volkswagen notes that connected services work whenever the vehicle is within a cellular coverage area, so you're not limited to the range of a traditional key fob.

Depending on the vehicle and active plan, remote access can include engine start, door locking and unlocking, and honk and flash.

Which Volkswagen Models Are Compatible with Remote Start?

A fixed list of models isn't very useful anymore, since the availability of Volkswagen remote start can change depending on the model year, trim and equipment. Two vehicles with the same name may not offer exactly the same features.

Volkswagen currently states that the myVW app is available for electric vehicles from the 2021 model year onward and for gas-powered vehicles from the 2022 model year onward. That said, not every vehicle that's eligible for the app automatically comes with remote start.

myVW and myVW+: Much More Than Remote Start

The myVW app is your gateway to Volkswagen's connected services. myVW+, formerly known as Car-Net, brings together a range of services related to remote access, vehicle information and safety. The features available to you depend on your vehicle and the plan it's eligible for.

For eligible vehicles, Volkswagen states that the VW Vehicle Insights and Safe & Secure packages are included for eight years on 2021 and newer electric models and on most 2022 and newer gas models.

Remote Access is currently included for four years on eligible 2021 to 2025 models and for three years on 2026 and newer models. At the time of this update, Volkswagen Canada lists a subscription of $9.99 per month or $99 per year after that. Packages, pricing and terms are subject to change.

How Do You Set Up the myVW App?

Activation is done right from the app. To get started:

• 1 Download the myVW app for free on an iOS or Android device.
• 2 Create your account and follow the registration steps in the app.
• 3 Add your Volkswagen using its vehicle identification number (VIN). You'll find the VIN behind the windshield or on your registration documents, among other places.
• 4 Activate myVW+ by following the instructions to connect your vehicle to the app through the infotainment system.

Once your vehicle is properly linked to your account, the features available for your Volkswagen will appear in the app. If a command doesn't show up, it may simply be a feature that isn't offered with your vehicle or plan.

How Does myVW Work with an Electric Volkswagen?

With an electric Volkswagen, there's no combustion engine to start remotely. Instead, the app helps you prepare the vehicle and keep an eye on key information before you head out.

On a compatible electric model like the Volkswagen ID.4, myVW can let you adjust the cabin temperature remotely, check battery status, monitor charging status and find charging stations.

Remote climate control is especially useful when driving an EV in winter: you can get the cabin comfortable before hitting the road without having to sit in the vehicle first.

Why Use Remote Start in Canada?

The main benefit of remote start is comfort. On a cold day, the heater can start warming up the cabin before you leave. During a heat wave, the air conditioning can start bringing the temperature down before you get in.

The myVW app also adds everyday convenience. Depending on the features your vehicle offers, you can check whether the doors are locked, view vehicle status information or locate your parked Volkswagen.

My Volkswagen Remote Start Isn't Working: What Should I Check?

A remote start issue doesn't necessarily mean the system is faulty. Before booking an appointment, a few quick checks can help:

• ✓ Confirm that your vehicle and trim are actually compatible with remote start.
• ✓ If you're using myVW, make sure your vehicle has been added to your account and that myVW+ is activated.
• ✓ Make sure your phone and vehicle are in an area with the cellular connection that connected services require.
• ✓ Check that your Remote Access plan is still active, if one is required.
• ✓ If you're using the key fob, make sure it has sufficient battery power and that you're within range, then check your owner's manual for the correct procedure.
