If you are considering purchasing a 7- passenger vehicle with remarkable energy efficiency, you will absolutely love the new electric Westfalia. Yes, you have read this correctly: the #vanline is back, under the guise of a 100% electric minibus!

Volkswagen Lauzon in Blainville tells you all you need to know about this future model, which will, just as its predecessor, definitely prove to be incredibly successful!

Arrival date

The ID.Buzz is due to arrive in Canada in 2024, with pre-orders starting at the end of 2024 exclusively on VolksKlick. One thing is for sure, this electric minibus will be eagerly awaited by all the nostalgic iconic Westfalia aficionados.  The prototype was first revealed in 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show and will be the very first 100% electric minibus to hit North-American roads.

Sustainability

The ID.Buzz was designed and produced with sustainability as a top priority. This includes:
- A steering wheel made entirely from non-animal materials.
- The ceiling is made from recycled PET bottles
- Seat velour 90% made from PET bottles

Similarities with the iconic Westfalia

Even if it is much more modern than the late Westfalia, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz design undeniably reminds us of its predecessor, especially when it comes to the large VW emblem at the front of the vehicle.  The face of the vehicle itself also reminds us of the Westfalia, like a blast from the past modernised just enough to fit neatly into the present. In fact, it was from the original Type 1 that the ID.Buzz was redesigned.

VW will lauched both the ID.Buzz bus and the ID.Buzz cargo versions simultaneously. The wheelbase of the cargo version is the same as the VW T6.1, with the cargo bus being 20 cm shorter!

Amongst the different features on the ID.Buzz, you will find LED headlights or, to quote the manufacturer, a true “pair of intelligent LED eyes that communicates the vehicle’s status with driver and pedestrians”.

So, when you are negotiating a turn, headlights follow in the same direction, offering you optimal lighting of the road ahead.  Moreover, the headlights can detect cyclists and pedestrians and warn them of your presence, thanks to the use of light signals.

Electric Minibus: battery and autonomy

Assembled at the Chattanooga factory in Tennessee, where the VW ID.4 was “born”, the electric Westfalia should offer –according to available information to date-, an 80 to 111 kWh battery, which can be recharged up to 80% in approximately thirty minutes.

Moreover, the ID.Buzz will have more or less 400 kilometers of range, making it one of the most interesting models when it comes to capacity.  It will also be possible to opt for a rear-wheel drive version with 201 horsepower, or an all-wheel drive model with a total of 295 horsepower, according to the latest available information.

According to our sources, it could also come with an automated driving system, which will make it the very first Volkswagen vehicle to be integrating this type of technology.  For the time being, this rumour only applies to the European market.

Unique technological features:
1. Active assisted lane change
2. Park Assist Plus with memory function
3. Constant software updates over-the-air
4. Bidirectional charging

Interior dimensions and added equipment

Its dimensions are very similar to those of the Atlas Cross Sport, whose cabin is remarkably spacious thanks to the efficiency gains brought about by the MEB platform. Its dimensions are approximately 4,962 mm in length, 1,985 mm in width and 1,927 mm in height. The ID. Buzz's seating options vary with the configuration, accommodating either five individuals (2/3), six passengers (2/2/2), or up to seven people (2/3/2).

The ID.Buzz offers a spacious, modular interior with a range of configurations, as well as a generous luggage compartment. One of those cool features is the voice command, including for navigation!

Its dedicated communication standard is independent of the cellular netowrk, including for valuable traffic information whihc can help you avoid accidents.

Presumed prices

For the time being, we expect the ID.Buzz to only be offered in the United States at a base price of under $USD 50,000. No information is yet available when it comes to prices for the Canadian market.

Moreover, depending on sale prices in Canada, the ID.Buzz could be eligible for electric vehicle government grants.  As a reminder, in order to be able to take advantage of Canadian government grants, a vehicle must have a MSRP of under $ 45,000, to which can be added up to $ 10,000 of options, for a total of $ 55,000.  If the vehicle offers seating for 7 passengers, the maximum amount climbs to $ 55,000, with a maximum of $ 5,000 for added options.

When it comes to provincial grants, the MSRP maximum price is $ 65,000 for the province of Quebec (that maximum price drops for other provinces).

Once we have official Canadian prices for the ID.Buzz, it will be much easier to establish the total amount of grants that buyers will be eligible for.
